Renault, a French automotive group based in 128 different countries around the world, manufactures a range of automobiles, from Formula One racing cars to compact midsize cars. Renault has been in business for 115 years and is the best-selling French car manufacturer and the ninth largest automaker in the world.
Before 2012, Renault had nearly 6 000 outdated BlackBerry devices that employees relied on to work remotely all over the world. With an increasingly large and diverse number of personal devices and operating systems—particularly iOS and Android—the risk to company security was great. The company needed a BYOD strategy that would address the security concerns as well as meet the different legal requirements of the countries it operates in. It wanted to switch its BlackBerrys to iPhones and provide employees new and better applications.
Initially, Renault was only going to give employees access to mail, agenda and contact applications but later decided it wanted to offer instant messaging and access to files and business applications.
In this massive endeavor, Renault’s goal was to provide a better user experience, a stronger security protocol and full control of employees’ mobile devices without risking a data breach.
After introducing a standalone mobile device management (MDM) solution, Renault opted to replace all of its BlackBerry devices around the world and effectively manage their applications. Renault chose Citrix XenMobile, which nicely coexists with the existing MDM solution, for mobile integration and management.
MDM makes it possible for Renault to isolate company-related components. Regardless of the device they are using, employees are no longer confused about what information and applications are personal versus professional. In case of a security problem, Renault can easily erase company data remotely but leave the user’s personal data alone.
“With the growing use of personal smartphones, we quickly saw the value in introducing a BYOD policy with a containerization approach,” says Damien Martayan, who heads up the workstations and mobility teams at Renault. “But we wanted to take it further by integrating an application aspect into our mobility strategy. XenMobile gave us this dual functionality.”
Choosing a solution that combined MDM and mobile application management (MAM) made it possible for Renault to adapt its BYOD policy to meet the legal requirements of different countries. In Brazil, for instance, photos can be integrated into the mail container, an option that is prohibited in other countries.;
Even before 2012, Renault was providing its employees with a number of internal applications. However, the company also produced apps for the public, available on iOS and Android, and Renault employees wanted to use those as well. Its BYOD strategy, which now includes MAM, solves this problem and gives employees the freedom to develop new business applications (such as enterprise social networking) and to create a community around applications.
XenMobile makes it possible for Renault to manage, in a secure and supervised way, the development of these applications and their integration into different types of mobile devices, both personal and professional.
With the success of Renault’s BYOD strategy for employee devices, it is ready to take the Citrix XenMobile MDM and MAM technologies further. Next on the agenda? To build a social networking platform that will allow employees around the world to be a mobile, connected workforce without restrictions, as long as there is an Internet connection. Renault also plans on developing new applications that can help to keep employees collaborating even when they are thousands of miles away.
